INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION GERMAN ANGORA RABBIT BREEDERS

FELTING CONTEST 2022

CALLING ALL FELTERS

pastedGraphic.png

IAGARB has a challenge for you!

What is the most beautiful and technically well-felted accessory you can make with 125 grams of fiber?

Angora Rabbit Wool makes luscious felt.  It is soft, dense, warm and has beautiful drape.

We want more people to try this humanely shorn wool with unique felting qualities.  To encourage more felters to include angora wool in their work, we invite you to join our contest.

Properties of Angora Rabbit Wool

  1. Wool sourced from IAGARB members has been gently and humanely shorn.
  2. Angora wool is eager to felt.  It will make a dense felt very quickly.
  3. Angora blends well with other fibres, especially fine sheep wools.
  4. The average diameter of the Underwool component of the coat runs between 8 and 12 microns.  This results in a tight felt with a delicate feel.
  5. The finished pieces can either be brushed to enhance the nap or shaved for a smooth fabric.

THERE WILL BE TWO CATEGORIES:  FELTED HAT AND FELTED SCARF

  1. There will be two categories for entry – HAT and SCARF
  2. Prizes in each category will be Amazon gift cards in US dollar amounts 1st – $100.00, 2nd – $50.00, 3rd – $25.00
  3. Maximum of 125 grams of fibre in the finished piece.
  4. The piece must be at least 50% humanely shorn angora rabbit wool.
  5. It is all about the fibre.  No nuno or laminated felt this time.
  6. Natural colours or dyed fibres accepted.
  7. You are welcome to enter one hat or one scarf or both.
  8. Work must have been completed in 2022.
  9. Deadline is midnight US Central Time, April 30, 2022

Our Judge is Pamela MacGregor, a renown felter.  The decisions of our judge will be final.

To enter please go to IAGARB.com for full details.

a breath of fresh air

After a long hiatus, I am updating the website. With COVID, the vendor shows have gone online, and so have my products. I am slowly getting everything loaded and working on new products. You can view them here. I am still figuring out this new e-commerce thing so products aren’t as organized as I would like. If there is something you are can’t find, just let me know.

Sheltering in place orders have returned me to my garden and as a result I am not only growing things to dye with but dyeing with these things. The first is hollyhocks. What fun! And an adventure. My new plants won’t produce until next year, so I got some from my friend Robin Lynde at Meridian Jacobs. Nigra is the variety that produces shades of green and pink. The flower is almost jet black.

With my love for Hollyhocks, I planted other varieties and colors, but they are too light in color to provide much color for dyeing. But I love them and next summer I am sure between the seeds they drop and the number I have planted I will find my yard overgrown with hollyhocks.

Once I got the Nigra hollyhocks from Robin, I went to work.

Next: Hibiscus. Stay tuned.

Summer Dyeing

It’s been busy and hot around here, but I’ve managed to get back to dyeing.  Had some fun with some small put ups of Angora/Cormo pencil roving with a pot of dye that didn’t fully discharge after overdyeing.  Hate to waste dye!

Shearing Day

IMG_5984

Autumn means time for shearing and breeding.  The temperatures have cooled significantly for breeding, but still warm enough for shearing without taking excessive measures to keep rabbits warm at night.

Willa is a one year old doe with a massive coat and beautiful conformation.  Today was shearing day for her as she was nearing her 90 day mark and was slowing down in eating.  Being a nice warm day for November, it was a perfect day to shear.

Clouds of Grey

Late summer in Northern California and not a hint of those grey clouds.  But this luscious grey roving will have to do until the real thing arrives.

Just in from the mill– German angora/fine Merino-Corriedale cross roving.  The Merino/Corrie cross fleece is from our friends at Nebo Rock Ranch  near Ukiah. A very lovely fleece hand picked for this project.

To get your hands on this yourself, visit our Shop.
